butter warm afternoon in Nasu
As July comes to an end, I thought the rainy days would be over but they seem to still be sticking around for a little longer in Tochigi. Gloomy weather usually brings me down so on Monday afternoon I decided to visit a local cafe in Nasu district called Butter No Itoko (Cousin of butter) to freshen up my mood. This is a newly founded cafe that just opened on June 20th this year! The Nasu district is home to many local cafes and restaurants so it was great to see this new place thriving in business!
The cafe’s specialties are gaufers filled with milk cream and donuts. What makes them the one and only is that they support local Nasu daily farms and use their nonfat skim milk as the main ingredient for their baked goods. Only 5% of the milk can be used in butter production and the rest (nonfat skim milk) doesn’t generate much profit, making it highly cost inefficient to farmers. By utilizing the nonfat skim milk, Butter No Itoko supports local dairy farms to reduce waste and raise the value of what is undervalued in the market. With mass production and consumption being the norm of today, it’s great to see locals coming together to support one another!
Their drink menu is limited to coffee, tea and a few juice options, but they are a perfect match to your midday snack at this cafe. The interior design is also spectacular with a modern, woody ambiance that’ll make you feel fuzzy and comfortable. It was unique from any chain cafe, and you can enjoy the little luxuries of the place on a rainy afternoon. An ice cream stand is also right next door, so if you’re in the mood for something more creamy you won’t be disappointed :)
This cafe is located on a small road branching from the main road with all of Nasu’s famous cafes and restaurants. If you’re in for a quiet, soothing atmosphere, I think this is the place for you. There are enough tables for about 7 groups and an extra more out in the terrace seats. To really get the feeling of this place, pay a visit and you’ll see!
