berries all around

It’s a gloomy Tuesday in Nasushiobara and it’s oddly chilly outside… I’ve been doing yoga in the mornings, catching up on some tv series, and having dinner with friends and former colleagues from time to time over the past week. It feels good to have more time for myself with less things I need to worry about! Last month was pretty hectic so I wasn’t able to post this in a timely manner, but I thought I’d share it today! In the last weeks of March my sister and close friends visited me, and we went strawberry picking at the lovely Yaita Satoyama strawberry farm just 40 minutes away from my apartment. I didn’t know of this place in until recently when a friend introduced it to me, but it’s now become a go-to place I’d like to take anyone else visiting upper Tochigi during the winter or early spring!

This strawberry farm is large in size and is composed of about 20 vinyl houses all sheltering strawberry patches inside. Here you can try the 50 minute all-you-can-eat strawberry picking session for 2000 yen. There are 5 types of strawberries they offer here, all famous and shipped all over Japan from Tochigi. You can only choose one of the five to devour since the vinyl houses are divided up by each strawberry type. We tried one called Skyberry, a type you can’t get your hands on in the grocery store without paying an excessive amount of money. After paying the fee, they took us to our own vinyl house and our strawberry gobbling session began! When we first entered the house, we saw an array of delicious looking strawberries scattered everywhere in the house. It’s not often you can see this view in Japan and to have the whole house to ourselves made the experience even better!

It was such a luxury to have all those strawberries to ourselves! Many of them were extremely big in size and tasted great. The bigger ones are a tad sour but the regular sized ones were really sweet and juicy. We picked them up and carried them to our mouths nonstop the first couple of minutes. They also have free homemade strawberry juice and coffee to try out after your session. By the time we were done we were happily full and satisfied:)

This strawberry farm also offers night sessions as well if you don’t have the time during the day! It’s better if you give a quick call before you drive to the farm to give them a heads up:) I highly recommend you pay a visit if you can.
