book review #2 big magic

- Elizabeth Gilbert

This book is a recommend for somebody looking for a light- hearted read on how you could add some creativity to your everyday life. The book is divided up into six chapters; courage, enchantment, permission, persistence, trust, and divinity; each filled with snippets of Gilbert’s life stories and lessons she learned throughout her life. I think this book is easier to pick up than most conventional self- development books, mainly because she’s written in an amiable style comprehendible to almost any age cohort!

The way she writes gives you a feeling of as if you’re having an actual conversation with her in your nearby café. Her charming humor gives life to the book and really kept me entertained. She also writes in a way that puts herself in the same bowl of soup as any of us; making her story very much relatable.

Before becoming the successful writer she is now, she worked various jobs (including working in a ranch!). She illustrates stories of how she gained inspiration from all the interactions she had in her day jobs, how she kept sending out her stories to publishers after receiving countless rejection letters, and how she eventually became the well-recognized author she is today. Through her own personal journey as a creator, she shows that creative output should primarily be for yourself, and that success in a creative profession comes through with commitment and much added playfulness!

This book has little sections within each chapter so it was a perfect book for me to squeeze into my mornings before heading out to work. If you want a little push on the back to start a new project or to finally put out something you’ve been too anxious to share openly, this is a good read for you! You’ll feel uplifted and motivated when you finish it because I sure did!

Thank you for reading till the end and I hope you’re having a great weekend :)

** I finished this book on a rainy Friday in a cafe. It’s a great book to accompany you in your detoxing time:)**
